Research and Scholarly Activities in Progress
The goal of my current research program is to
explore agricultural contributions to the development of bacterial antibiotic
resistance. Bacterial pathogens
that are resistant to currently used antibiotics are emerging as a leading
healthcare concern of the 21st century. Antibiotic resistance is an unavoidable result of antibiotic
use. Since over half of the
antibiotics produced each year in the U.S. are used in agricultural settings,
this is an important arena to consider when assessing the risks of antibiotic
use.
My current research project is focused on a
comparison of bacterial antibiotic resistance on conventional and organic
dairies. In 2004 and 2005, my students
and I collected milk samples from both types of dairies, isolated Staphylococcus bacteria from these milk samples and determined
the resistance profiles of each strain.
A manuscript detailing this data was published early in 2008 in Journal
of Applied Microbiology.
More recently, my students have identified
resistance genotypes in the subpopulation of antibiotic resistant Staphylococcus from these farms. Posters detailing that work have been presented at various
American Society for Microbiology meetings (both regional and national).
Finally, I recently started a collaboration with
Dr. Dennis Johnson, dairy scientist at West Central Research and Outreach
Center. He began transitioning
half of his research dairy herd to organic management in September 2008. We are working together on surveillance
of issues surrounding mammary health, including bacterial antibiotic
resistance, during the transition.
