What Makes a Family?

Families throughout the world or even within the U.S. may look different, and interact in ways which are different, from what we deem as ``families". Does it mean that we have very different values, thus constructing a scale of measure, or do our values have more commonalities than we care to explore or dare to accept? We will discuss multicultural, multiracial, and multireligious issues related to various perceived types of families.

BIG PICTURE OF
First Year Seminar on Human Diversity:
a common experience for first year students
1. Description

Goals: To help students to:

think critically,
assess sources of information, and
become aware of the lenses through which they perceive and to recognize that their perceptions are not universal.

Theme: The current theme is human diversity -- racial, ethnic, cultural, social, economic, class, gender, and sexual orientation.

Methods: This course is intellectually rigorous, including a variety of materials such as readings, convocations, presentations, and performances. Students will respond to these through discussion, writing assignments, and other projects designed by instructors and/or students.
2. Scheduling and Structure

Schedule: The first class will be scheduled during orientation (Friday, August 25) to give students a chance to get to know each other. After orientation, classes will meet for two one-hour sessions each week for the rest of the semester. Convocations will be scheduled outside class time; accommodations ( for convocations only ) will be made for students with scheduling constraints because of jobs, family, and other obligations.

Structure:
Weeks 1-3: Common readings form the FYS Reader 2000.
Weeks 4-13: Our sections will focus on "What Makes A Family".
Around Mid-semester: Information Literacy Workshop by the Library Staff.
Week 13-14: Common activities eg Jamboree, exchange among sections.
Week 15: Course project presentations.
