My current research focuses on helping children notice opportunities for discussing math while they work on designing
patchwork quilt blocks that solve mathematical challenges (e.g., "Make a quilt block that is 1/2 red, 2/8 blue, and 1/4
yellow"). Before that, I worked on getting and keeping children engaged with a constructionist design tool for craft and math.
The software that is integral to my research work, DigiQuilt,
is a manipulative-based design environment for children to design
patchwork quilt blocks and learn about fractions and symmetry along the
way. DigiQuilt has been used in classrooms and at home by third through
fifth graders for the past seven years over the course of its
development.
