Cool O-Chem Links
Return to NEC's Homepage
There are tons of links to chemistry sites of every size, shape and
description. As a UMM chemistry student, you'll want to check out the
UMM Chemistry
Discipline Home Page. This home page has announcements pertinent to
our chemistry and biochemistry students and provides much useful information for our majors.
Another quick link you might find handy is the following link to the Hougton Mifflin
web site for supplemental help associated with your textbook.
In the links below I'm providing what I think
is an
interesting variety of links you might find interesting or useful.
Helpful Stuff for O-Chem
- O-Chem Demos at
Colby
College. This link includes the Sn2 / Sn1 demo shown in class.
- O-Chem tutorials from Frostburg State
University
-
Two excellent links for those of you who are
spectroscopically-intrigued.
- The Smith Group at Notre Dame has a Organic Structure
Elucidation site. There you will find the spectra of several organic unknowns: see
if you
can figure out their structures!
- A similar site with a plethora of unknowns, along with
helpful hints about solving these kinds of problems, can be found at
WebSpectra,
out of UCLA.
Helpful Stuff for Lab
Helpful Stuff for Chemistry in general
Just Cool Chemistry Stuff
- Mighty Molecules! Rasmol
will
take you into some VERY impressive graphics of interesting biologically
active molecules.
- This is a neat site: the Molecule of
the Month features interesting information coupled with great
graphics.
Undergraduate Research and Career Stuff
- Undergraduate Research Opportunities!!! The American Chemical Society
maintains a directory of research options
(largely in industrial settings) at
Directory of Experience Opportunities
- The
Organic Chemist at Work Dr. Rainer Ernst Glaser of the
University of Missouri has compiled this very interesting link to useful
organic chemistry sites, including job opportunities/information. In case
you were wondering what you could do with a degree in chemistry...
- A Career Awareness weblink from Mayo Clinic -- very useful info.
In a similar vein, if you've been wondering what you can do with a
career in chemistry, here is just ONE example of the many
paths you can take (there are many other pharmaceutical companies on the
web, and a vast number of other companies that offer employment to
chemists! Do not take my selection of Abbott as an endorsement).
This link tells you about careers at
Abbott, as well as SUMMER
INTERNSHIP opportunities that is worth
checking out!
Just For Fun
- Studying got you down? Check out Peep Research for a good laugh!
- Ever heard of Tom Lehrer? It's about time you did! His song, The
Elements is a classic.
- Some of you may know of my "interest" in the musical glorification (?) of organic chemistry....Well, I'm not alone! Click here for some wild applications of organic chemistry to music (or vice versa?)!!!
