Email: BURKEBR@caa.morris.umn.edu Required text: Public Speaking: An Audience-Centered Approach by Beebe and Beebe. (Exams will be drawn from the textbook). Course objectives: 1) to increase your confidence in your public speaking ability. 2) to learn principles of effective public speaking. 3) to demonstrate aspects of effective speech preparation. 4) to appropriately apply public speaking skills to a variety of speech contexts. Attendance policy: Attendance is mandatory, and will be checked at each class meeting. If you miss class the day you are expected to present a speech, turn in an assignment, or take an exam, you will NOT be allowed to make up that activity. If you do miss a class, it is your responsibility to get notes from one of your classmates . The following attendance policy will be enforced in this class: 1) Your first two absences are without penalty. 2) Your third absence will lower your final course grade by 5 points. 3) Each subsequent absence lowers your final course grade an additional 5 points. Plagiarism policy: Plagiarism is grounds for probation from the university. Any student caught cheating on an exam, using someone else's speech topic, outline, or notes, or using information from sources without citing those sources will be given an automatic N* for the course.
