Other times are available by appointment--email or phone to
set up a
time. If I'm away from my phone or talking on it, the voicemail option
will respond. Leave your name, number, and a
brief message in my voicemail, and I'll return the
call; this is probably the fastest way to reach me, and it
is available after University business hours. Email is always available,
of course, and is also a good way to
reach me.

Welcome to UMM
Let me take a moment to say "Welcome." I'm happy that you chose the
University of Minnesota, Morris, for your college education. Please let
me know how I can assist you as questions arise.
Advising Appointments
You will need a minimum of 3 advising appointments during the year,
because you will need an advisor signature in order to register for
classes. Please feel free to schedule as many additional appointments
as you like to discuss career plans and possibilities, etc. It is
expected that you and I will keep advising appointments and
be on time for them. If you must cancel an appointment, be sure to phone,
email, or
leave a message. I will do the same. You don't need an appointment to
drop by during a
scheduled
office hour. I keep the office hour times that are posted on my UMM
faculty Web page (on my Home page)
updated when
things change, e.g., during finals week, summers, etc., so check there for
the most
current information.
Advising Schedule for the Year
First-year students must have their course schedule plan approved by
their advisors prior to registering each semester. Our first
group advising meeting will have gotten you started on your
plan. When you
have your plan worked out or if you have questions or "get
stuck," schedule an appointment with me
or come in
during
an office hour, and I will go over your plan with you. If you
missed the first advising group session, please make an
appointment to see me right away. Advising appointments must be held
several days before
you register. Feel free to call for additional appointments as the need
arises.
Annual Planning
Students may do long-range planning for themselves at any time, but
during the spring we have a special mandated process called "Annual
Planning."
Second- and third-year students do Annual Planning, too, so be certain to
schedule an appointment early because it's a busy time. Come prepared
with course choices to meet general education, major, and minor (if any)
requirements for graduation; many courses need to be taken in sequence,
some courses are in high demand, and lack of planning can slow down your
progress towards your degree. As you make your course choices, I hope
you will consider the
information on my linked page entitled
"How to Get
The Most From Your UMM Experience."
Is Your Major
Still Undecided?
I will be glad to meet with you to discuss your interests and
options. In addition, watch for special Student Counseling
programs for undecided students that may be advertised in the Weekly
Bulletin. The
Career Center is a great resource to
help you decide your major or future plans for a career.
Changing Advisors
Initial advisor assignments are based upon student's major preferences
and upon current faculty advising loads. You might want to change
advisors, for example, if you change your major, or if you really hit it
off well with a particular professor, or just because. Students are free
to change advisors anytime--simply contact the
Academic Advising Office.
